Welcome to the December edition of The Radiology Rundown.

As things start to wrap up for the festive season, I want to review RSNA 2024 and look forward to the year ahead in Medical Imaging.

RSNA 2024 Review

RSNA is the event of the year in Radiology, and this year really didn’t disappoint. The technology and innovation on display is always inspiring, and the passionate individuals that make it all happen, even more so.

My review of RSNA 2023 was ‘Partnerships, Platforms & Positivity’, and I feel like a lot of those points are still relevant to 2024, but in a much more developed way.

Concerning AI in radiology, there is still a consolidation of companies in the market, with partnerships and collaborations being the order of the day. I can’t see this slowing down either. In 2025 expect to see OEM’s working with more of the leading radiology AI solution providers, through partnership or acquisition.

Platform companies are still a real hot topic, with a handful of organizations leading the way in this part of the market. Partnerships in this space are nothing new either. Further growth across North America for these companies in 2025 is to be expected, along with further expansion of the types of solutions they offer.

Compared to 2023 however, the conversation has noticeably moved along for AI in Radiology. Sergey Morozov was one of the first people I met with at RSNA this year and on a deepc webinar with Dr. Franz MJ Pfister, MD, MBA to recap RSNA last week, he summarised this well where he said there was a:

‘Transition towards maturity in AI…it felt like the conversation at RSNA was more about procurement of AI and platforms in order to scale up its usage’

So, how is the market looking?

Without fail, that’s the most common question I was asked at RSNA.

When it comes to recruitment in Radiology, this year there was more than just positivity that the 12 months ahead would be better for hiring.

I met with countless companies ready to add new people to their team in 2025 and managed to make multiple introductions in the exhibition halls, for those organisations looking to get the jump on the best talent.

Investment is still not at the level it was a few years ago, but it is there. Companies aren’t in full attack mode when it comes to headcount growth, it’s more measured and targeted and every hire must work. There’s less room for error.

What does 2025 have in store?

I’m not going to make predictions for technology and market trends in Radiology for the year ahead. For those sorts of insights, look to individuals like; Jan Beger, Amine Korchi & Kicky van Leeuwen.

When it comes to what the radiology recruitment market will look like in 2025:

  • Contract Hiring – For companies looking to grow, but without the commitment of a permanent hire, consultancy/contractor hires will continue to be key. Particularly for European start-ups growing into the US, fractional sales contributors to win those first few strategic partners will be very valuable. Include Regulatory Specialists in this as well.
  • European Takeover – So the word ‘takeover’ might be too strong but expect to see more European Radiology start-ups gain a foothold in the US market, often with US-based investment to support them. European countries have to do more to ensure all the best innovation doesn’t head straight to the US, and US start-ups need to stay at the top of their game, so they don’t miss out on the best talent.
  • Product Management Resurgence – With the layoffs across healthcare and tech the past few years, product managers in MedTech were disproportionately affected. The last few months of 2024 has shown a real uptick in hiring of Product Managers and I see this continuing in 2025.

RSNA is a unique opportunity for me to meet my network and continue to develop my knowledge in a market that I’ve had the pleasure of working in for almost 8 years. So a big thank you to everyone who took the time to speak at RSNA, and I look forward to seeing you all again in Chicago next year.
